The Szilágyság of Transylvanian Hungarian literature has been called „old, rough and bumpy” by Ady and „fond of singing Szilágy” by Károly Kós. Actually it’s located in the northwestern corner of today’s Transylvania. The area is surrounded by the Bükk, Meszes and Réz mountains and on the northeast by the Szamos (Somes) River Valley. Its western side, however, is open, the hilly landscape slowly melting into the Great Plain. Its name is said have originated from the Szilágy (elm tree) Creek. Many do not consider Szilágyság to be part of Transylvania, thinking of it instead as „Partium”, the name for the eastern part of the old Hungarian kingdom which was split off during the Turkish occupation. For us who are considering the region primarily from the traditional instrumental folk music standpoint; Szilágyság clearly belongs to the Transylvanian dialect with indications of transitional characteristics from Szatmár, Bihár and the Great Plain (Alföld) areas.
