Meybahar - Afousis
Meybahar was born when Greek santouri player Marilia Pilti met violinist/ sound engineer Kopcsik Márton in Budapest. Recently, the creative duet started working on new material joined by Gerzson János on oud (Arabic lute) and Radisz Afrodité on vocals. The band gets inspiration from the ancient Middle-Eastern modal musical heritage, various modern music influences, and the magic of freely experienced moments.
The newly released single also shows the birth of a new soundscape in the band's life. The Hungarian National Cultural Fund (NKA) provided support for the new music video made for their single which also embraces and presents the band's former work.
Meybahar debuted its new line-up of musicians and instrumentation at the Hungarian House of Music in a joint concert with Hungarian cymbalom player Lukács Miklós and lyra player Sokratis Sinopoulos. They also gave successful concerts in Graz and Belgrade.
"This song is becoming more and more popular in Greece. Its message is still relevant today. Especially today we can feel Afousis' story!" (Marilia Pilti)

The story of Afousis
Afousis’ life is a series of tragedies. After witnessing his father’s murder, he moved to the small island of Kasos near Crete. However he found it impossible to continue living and working as he had, as a teacher. He kept thinking about what had happened, until finally he just wandered the village like a deranged wolf. Despite all this, everyone loved him for his huge heart and good humor. People in the village would buy him a drink so he would tell one more story that may lighten his soul. When he died the whole village gathered to give him a proper farewell.
He could only meet in secret with the great love of his life, a sailor’s widow because according to old local customs, she would have become the object of serious contempt. As the story goes, one night Afousis couldn't take it anymore, so he went to his lover's window and sang this song to her.
