The religious folk songs sung in Hungarian appeared long before the Reformation; they had derived from Latin Gregorians. The official canonized liturgy did not accept them and it was forbidden to sing them in the church. Besides the Gregorian chants the musical sources of these songs can also be found in the canonized religious songs spread all over Europe and in Hungarian folk songs.
The fact that they had been excluded from liturgies led to their slow but continuous transformation according to the laws of oral tradition. They began to be taken down in the 16th-17th centuries and little by little accept also in churches. But every edition contained new songs, the old ones being omitted and maintained only in folk communities.
Even nowadays there is a lighter link between these songs and church service in the Church of Roma than at the Protestants. And this holds good in respect of the Catholic Hungarians living in Moldavia as they have had very few occasions to sing in their mother-tongue; and their wish in this respect is unfulfilled even nowadays.
