In my youth, as a musician under the influence of Transylvania’s dance house (folk revival) movement, I soon realized that unless we started collecting music immediately in our home villages, a whole treasury of tradition would be lost. So, my parents laid out what at the time was a small fortune and we bought a 13-kg Unitra tape recorder. My mother sewed a bag for it and I set out to collect folk music in and around my home village of Gyergyóditró (Ditrău).

I was, first of all, confronted with the overwhelming popularity of nóta – composed folky popular tunes. I was baffled by them and the unpleasant fact that my relatives (of course I turned to them first) saw no difference between folk songs and the composed popular folk tunes. Bartók himself wrote a letter about the same thing when collecting in Transylvania way back in 1907. Through my relatives’ connections and a bit of stamina, I was finally able to record many of the same folk songs and ballads that had fascinated Kodály and Bartók on their first collection trips.
