On this record we present another side of the Hungarian and Romanian music of Kalotaszeg and its vicinity. At first the music may seem quite similar to what we might call the “classic” music of the Kalotaszeg region.
That is not too surprising given that the nearby Váralmás (Almaşu), was once the musical centre of this smaller region and it had major Gypsy musician dynasties that played for the Romanians, Hungarians and Gypsies alike.

The two lead violin players on this recording have inherited the knowledge of those musical dynasties – although they were born after 1948 into the “new world” of communism.
As children, they learned a lot in the 1960s and 1970s from the traditional culture along Almás Creek, handed down to us by a gene-ration of great Kalotaszeg musicians, such as Ferenc Varga “Csipás”, Sándor Fodor “Neti”, Miklós Nonika “Hitler” or Aladár Zágor “Pici”.
