May 21st – Chalaban concert
This concert marks the opening of the Fonó’s large indoor space for concerts with live audiences. Chalaban was founded by Moroccan musician Saïd Tichiti who makes his own blend of music from Moroccan, Central European, Balkan and Gypsy traditions. Their music goes beyond folk music uniting the southern and northern, eastern and western instruments and melody. The result is that every Chalaban concert and album is full of the desert and intellectuality, smoothed out with the melancholy melodies of Central Europe. Chalaban has released 6 albums so far, the last one was presented at a concert in Budapest’s Palace of the Arts.

May 29th - Branka Trio with guests: Varga Veronika and Babcsán Bence

Branka Trio will perform with guests Varga Veronika (voice, double bass) and Babcsán Bence (saxophone, clarinet). This project comes out of Basits Branka’s statement: “My father is Serbian, my mother is Hungarian, so I’m half Serbian and half Hungarian, but instead I feel both 100% Serbian and 100% Hungarian.” Following from this, the goal of the project is to build the bridge and find the cross section through music between two seemingly diverging thoughts: the old-new, traditional-modern, known-unknown and half-whole between two cultures and points on the map.
