13 festival venues well beyond the boundaries of present-day Hungary, more than 100 artists - that is “Héttorony Fesztivál” / Festival of Seven Towers this year

The symbol of the seven towers has been a reappearing image in Hungarian culture for centuries. It came to stand for the cultural heritage, collective memory, and creativity that accumulated within the seven towers of Vienna (A), Košice (SK), Mukachevo (UA), Bra ș ov (RO), Novi Sad (SRB), Zagreb (HR), and Maribor (SLO), including Imre Makovecz’s buildings and intellectual legacy.

The world famous Hungarian Pavilion by Imre Makovecz of the 92 World EXPO, Sevilla (Spain) almost instantly became a national symbol. Ten years later this building inspired the first “Héttorony Fesztivál” / Festival of Seven Towers. This year the festival, originally the dream of Ferenc Kiss folk musicians and artistic director, launches in Visegrad, tours Slovenia, and embarks for Révkomárom in Slovakia. The opening gala will take place 20th November - the birthday of Imre Makovecz, in the Szent Imre parish church in Újbuda (Budapest), close to the home of the late architect. The organisers’ mission is to showcase the outstanding Hungarian folk and world musicians to the Hungarian population of neighbouring countries, and emphasize the organic connection that exists between music and architecture. Therefore, besides the concerts, exhibitions, talks, and children programmes in the spirit of Makovecz Imre will also be part of the festival. Among the guest musicians are Katalin Szvorák, Bea Palya, Félix Lajkó, Mohammad Reza Mortazavi, András Berecz, István Berecz, Etnofon, Söndörgő, Góbé, Csík bands, as well as György Ferencz and the Rackajam – just to mention a few names from many.
