Serbian-Hungarian Dance House: Poklade
Fonó Budai Zeneház (Fonó Music House) has joined this year’s Serbian–Hungarian cultural season alongside partners including Hagyományok Háza (House of Traditions), Nemzeti Színház (National Theatre), the Serbian Orthodox Church of Buda, and the Serbian Theatre of Hungary. As part of the collaboration, a South Slavic dance house takes place every month, where leading ensembles from the region bring to life the diverse musical heritage of the South Slavic peoples along the Danube. The series, running through July, connects to Fonó’s earlier concert programs.
The evening’s guest is Poklade: the Poklade ensemble contains the whole Balkans within it. The sound of cicadas, shattering glass, the fiery burn of rakija. Flavors, scents, colors, pain and love of life, but above all, a kind of ancient energy that grabs your hand and carries you away. Their music is true poklade, a genuine transformation. The Poklade ensemble was founded in Mohács in 2010 by students of legendary masters József Versendi Kovács and György Tiszai.
Their repertoire brings together the melodic and rhythmic worlds of the Balkan peoples, shaped and reimagined through their own musical taste. Their performances range from dance houses to festival concerts. Over the fifteen years since their founding, they have traveled across Hungary and performed many times throughout the Balkans and other European countries, expanding their musical knowledge and refining their style.
