Rita Ocskay and Friends: From Esztény to Bonchida - The Unknown Yet Familiar Music of the Kis-Szamos Region

Refined ornamentation, a sound world slightly reminiscent of Kalotaszeg yet distinctly its own. The music of the Kis-Szamos region is the voice of a fully independent micro-region, different from the better-known melodies of the Mezőség.

As a continuation of the 2018 album Bonchidától Bonchidáig, this time the selection turns toward the music of this lesser-known area, drawing from both Hungarian and Romanian traditions. The program features melodies from musicians of Válaszút, Bonchida, Esztény, Kide, Doboka, and Kendilóna, including Csoma Ferenc, Sztojka József “Vak Náni,” Béla Kolbász, Gavris Kolozsi, and László Petrusán.

At the heart of the concert stands Csoma Ferenc, the legendary primás of Esztény, of whom Pál Járdányi wrote:
“Several bands operate in the area. The most famous and the best is the ensemble of Csoma Ferenc, the Hungarian peasant from Esztény; he is invited most often.”

The repertoire is based on the collections of Lajos Kocsis, Pál Járdányi, Piroska Demény, István Almási, Ádám Könczei, and Zoltán Kallós, while the songs were selected by Ágnes Enyedi.

The evening promises to be a true musical delicacy, a finely woven tapestry of regional memory and living tradition.

Everyone is warmly welcome.
