From Folk Music to Jazz – Improvisation Workshop with Frankie Látó

As a folk musician, ornamentation and variation are already in your blood. But have you ever wondered how to use that same freedom in the world of jazz and modern genres?

Join us for a special 4-hour course at Fonó Budai Zeneház (Fonó Music House), where we’ll explore the secrets of improvisation specifically from a string player’s perspective (and ear). I’ll show you how to transfer your existing knowledge into a different harmonic world, and how to become more confident when stepping away from sheet music and familiar patterns.

What will we cover? A bridge between two worlds: how folk-style variation turns into a jazz solo. Rhythm and “pulse”: translating swing and modern grooves onto string instruments. Harmonic awareness: how to approach jazz chords.

Technical tricks: special bowing techniques and fingerings for a richer, more expressive sound.

This afternoon is not about dry theory, but about making music together and pushing boundaries. Bring your instrument, and let’s step out of the comfort zone together!

Ticket price: 20,000 HUF, 16,000 HUF for students
