From Classical Music to Folk Music - Exploring the Parallels Between the Classical and Folk Music of Hungarian Composers

Many 19th- and 20th-century composers worked across several musical genres simultaneously. This event explores the work of renowned Hungarian composers who made outstanding contributions to both folk and classical music. Those working in classical music and folk music sometimes regard each other's artistic orientations as worlds apart, yet these two musical traditions can be closely intertwined.

Bartók and Kodály, the two leading figures of Hungarian folk music research, both drew extensively on the folk music preserved in peasant culture in their compositions. Whether in Kodály's Dances of Marosszék or Bartók's piano works, they incorporated elements of the peasant repertoire into the world of art music. This event aims to explore that very connection. Alongside these musical parallels, we will also hear arrangements by contemporary composer Botond Őri Kiss, who opens up new musical perspectives.

Performers:

Sándor Csoóri Jr. “Sündi” - viola
Botond Őri Kiss - piano
Péter Friderikusz - cello
Bori Busai - folk dance
Sára Zolnai - vocals

The program is supported by the Béla Halmos College of the National Cultural Fund of Hungary (NKA).
