Fonó Wednesday: Dances from Marossárpatak

Marossárpatak is located in Transylvania, in the Upper Maros region, specifically along the southern stretch of the Upper Maros valley, about 13 kilometers from Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely). The area is known for several important folk music centers, including Magyarpéterlaka, Marosjára, and Marossárpatak.

The typical dance sequence of this region includes: verbunk, forduló (fast turning dance), lassú csárdás (slow csárdás), korcsos, and cigánycsárdás.

In this region, the cimbalom is an essential part of the otherwise string-based folk scene, much like in the northern areas. Between the two regions, however, there are some differences in the melodies associated with particular dances and musical genres.

Based on participant feedback, the dance teaching will continue to run in two groups: beginner and advanced levels.

Dance instructors: Chifor Lénárd, Barta Réka (The instructors for the other group are still being confirmed.)
