Dresch Quartet & Hidak Trio

Dresch Quartet

Mihály Dresch formed his first ensemble in 1986 with the aim of creating a distinctive musical style. Its main elements were the improvisational language of jazz and Hungarian musical traditions. This artistic vision was recognized with a Kossuth Prize in 2022. The quartet has existed in its current form for eight years. He has maintained a musical partnership with Miklós Lukács (an internationally acclaimed cimbalom artist) for over twenty years, and the quartet is completed by Marcell Gyányi on double bass and László Csizi on drums, both outstanding figures in the Hungarian jazz scene.

Mihály Dresch is a lifetime achievement award-winning musician of Fonó (Fonó Budai Zeneház – Fonó Music House), and we are proud that his life’s work has so often been built on Fonó’s releases and concerts.

Dresch believes:

Following the path of Bartók, different influences are absorbed into my music, and I want to show what I consider to be of value. He adds that this is a very difficult path.

Openness is essential. One should try to remain like a child, and good music can only have a positive effect. I know these are big words, because what counts as good music is a matter of perspective. For me, music is acoustic, although I do know some great rock as well...

Hidak Trio

HIDAK Trio is the meeting point and shared creative workshop of three outstanding figures of the Hungarian jazz scene. Péter Cseh, Tibor Fonay, and Tamás Hidász have proven themselves together and separately in numerous formations, but in this band they unfold their musical ideas more freely and completely than ever before.

True to its name, HIDAK Trio (HIDAK meaning “Bridges”) seeks to connect different points: linking the members of the band with each other, the performer with the listener, and tradition with innovation.

Their sound spans a wide spectrum, and almost anything can serve as inspiration for the members, so their repertoire comfortably brings together the harmonic richness of modern jazz, the pulsating rhythmic drive familiar from minimal music, and slowly flowing soundscapes.

All three members contribute as composers, roles within the band can shift and interchange freely—thanks to the bridges they have built.

Members:
Péter Cseh - guitar
Tibor Fonay - double bass, electric bass
Tamás Hidász - drums
