JAZZFEST BUDAPEST: Bolyki Sára & Várallyay Petra feat. Szlama László, Gyányi Marcell
The audience knows Sára Bolyki and Petra Várallyay from many musical formations, this time they are coming to JazzFest Budapest with their world jazz duo. The formation was formed in 2019 and plays arrangements and original pieces inspired by Hungarian, Celtic, Caucasian and Balkan folk music with a lot of improvisation and overwhelming power. As a jazz singer, Sára brings with her the exuberance and freedom of improvisation, as a folk musician a commitment to sounding frill-free and authentic, and thanks to her studies in Georgia, the Caucasian lute, the chonguri. Petra’s distinctive violin playing is at once rhythm, melody and harmony. Her compositional thinking and her usual percussive grooves are also a dominant feature of the duo’s music, providing a safe ground for creative ideas. Their May concert will also feature two outstanding guest musicians: the sought-after jazz bassist Marcell Gyányi (Dresch Quartet, New Fossils, MacroHang) and the versatile folk musician László Szlama (Bordó Sárkány, PásztorHóra, HolddalaNap).
