Fonó Wednesday: Dances of Zselyk
On Fonó Wednesdays we welcome beginner and advanced dancers who are interested in deepening their knowledge of regional dances through weekly dance classes. Live music instruction runs concurrently in both beginner and advanced groups, followed by singing lessons and a dance house.
Between the valleys of the Sajó and the Dipse rivers lies the village of Zselyk, inhabited exclusively by Hungarian-speaking, Lutheran residents. Here, the region’s ancient traditions—such as unique wedding customs and the melodies associated with them—have been preserved most faithfully, making Zselyk a small island village, or micro-region, similar to Szék in the Mezőség area. The Forgatós Kamara Táncegyüttes has been engaged with the traditions and dance heritage of Zselyk for over 10 years. They regularly participate in the village’s dance events and heritage programs and have long supported the professional work of the local traditional dance group. They also frequently organize camps, dance houses, dance collection sessions, as well as professional and community programs.
