Dresch Vonós Quartet, Canarro

Dresch Vonós Quartet

Mihály Dresch founded his String Quartet a few years ago, aiming to create a thrilling fusion of genres, this time approaching it more prominently from a folk music perspective, while maintaining his signature Dresch sound. Their first studio album, Forrásból, was released in 2017 under Fonó Records, marking the birth of new musical qualities at the intersection of jazz and Hungarian folk traditions. "With his saxophone, fuhun, and surprisingly powerful singing voice, Mihály Dresch took on the role of a traditional folk music lead fiddler – with effortless naturalness. The album, which works brilliantly both in dance houses and concert halls, fits organically into the Dresch oeuvre," wrote Attila Retkes in Gramofon magazine about the album at the time. Their second album, Ongaku, was released in 2021, featuring a new lineup after a change in members: Sándor Csoóri Sündi (viola, tambura), Ferenc Zimber (cimbalom), and András Bognár (double bass), with Hortenzia Lőrincz joining them as a vocalist for one track. Dresch said the following about the album: "In Japanese, 'ongaku' means music. In Chinese, this character differs by just one sign from the word for medicine. During a rehearsal, before this composition had its final name, we felt a connection to Eastern cultures. These two concepts are easily linked even with Hungarian thinking. The relationship between music and the soul is not a new idea; its beneficial effects were already recognized by the ancient Greeks. I hope this album approaches both meanings."

Canarro

Canarro is one of the finest Hungarian representatives of the French manouche swing (or gypsy jazz) style. Their music blends the lightness of French jazz, chansons, tangos, and Hungarian café music at a high level.

With an inimitable tone, their repertoire includes original pieces and well-known melodies: the musical legacy of Django Reinhardt spiced with Budapest’s early 20th-century salon music, a hint of Paris, and the freedom of jazz.

The band’s sophisticated sound and unique style provide a direct and one-of-a-kind musical experience for their audience, further enhanced by the enchanting presence and voice of vocalist Orsolya Sapszon, who performs songs in French, Hungarian, and English.

In short: Canarro is lively and exciting.
