Dikh TV presents: 20 Years of Karaván Família, EtnoRom

Dikh TV's series introduces the emblematic figures of Hungarian Roma folk music.

Karaván Família

The unique family band created by parents and their children, Karaván Família, has established its own world over the past 20 years based on Roma vocal traditions. Their repertoire has proven that Roma music is intelligent and witty, wise and inclusive. Their melodies do not originate from a single region or Roma ethnic group but from the European Roma cultural and musical heritage. In their songs, alongside various characteristic European Roma musical styles, one can feel the influence of Latin music, blues, and pop – resulting in a world music style never heard before. Despite this diversity, Karaván Família manages to maintain its own style, which is both youthful and respectful of traditions, entertaining and lovable.

Hungarian Roma folk music, which primarily represents the world of Roma folk songs, came to the stage in the 1980s. In the early days, most performers in the genre were both traditional informants and stage artists. Their repertoire included traditional Roma folk songs, adaptations, and original compositions that perfectly fit the style. Their approach was characterized by a desire not to be successful but to be authentic. They aimed to play beautifully, not quickly, and sought to showcase their values. They played what they found true and beautiful. Karaván Família does the same.

For their 20th anniversary concert at Fonó, they will be joined on stage by guest artist friends.

EtnoRom

The band was founded by József Balog and Ágnes Künstler in 2005, bringing together virtuosos of Hungarian Roma music. Over the past decades, millions have danced to their songs from Japan to the United States, and their voices were celebrated as the first “authentic Roma voice” to emerge from Central Europe. EtnoRom's repertoire ranges from authentic Oláh Roma songs to overwhelmingly dynamic “Roma world music” spiced with swing and jazz. József Balog was named "Ambassador of Roma Music" by the Blessed Ceferino Order of Knights – the world's only Christian Roma order – established in 2011, in recognition of his musical work. The songs, performed by his and Ágnes Künstler's magical voice, “dancing with lush sounds,” transport the audience far from everyday life to a distant world filled with joys and sorrows.
