Chalaban
Moroccan musician
Saïd Tichiti
founded Chalaban in Budapest in 2000. The band has played a dynamic role in Central and Eastern European world music life. Moroccan music blends with Central European, Balkan and Gypsy music traditions.
Leader of the group Said Tichiti is from the Southern Moroccan city of Guelmim. He completed his studies at the Rabat Drama Institute. At the beginning of his musical career he decided to focus on Moroccan styles of music known as: Gnawa, Ganga, Hassani and Guedra. Chalaban’s music goes beyond folk music, since their goal is to blend southern and northern, eastern and western instruments and melodies. Every Chalaban concert or album is full of the desert and the spiritual, smoothed out with Central Europe’s melancholy melodies. Chalaban has made 6 records:
Nomad, Moroccan Spring, Al Baraka, Nejdeb, Hashish Free
, and in November of 2017 the band‘s newest record
“Gleimim”
was presented at a full house concert in Budapest’s Palace of the Arts.
