Hungarian Folksongs
Balázs Elemér Group
is one of Hungary’s most popular jazz bands. It was founded by the internationally known drummer Balázs Elemér in the year 2000. The members of the band are all musicians from the cutting edge of Hungarian jazz. The band has won Hungarian awards (Fonogram 2005) and performed at festivals in Vienna, London, Berlin, the Hague, Prague, Bratislava, Skopje, Rome, Oslo, Glasgow and Madrid.
The group has their own unique sound, which is mainly melody-centered characterized by special rhythm and the contrast between the man’s and woman’s voices. Their music is exceptionally varied and they like to adventure for example into the world of ethno style dipping into all kinds of musical cultures for inspiration. This can be felt on all their recordings to date, always creating a unique atmosphere and world of music. On “Magyar népdalok” (Hungarian Folk Songs) They unite the music from their own culture and Hungarian folk songs with their characteristic jazz style; just as they did with Baroque music and jazz on their album “Early Music” with ECHO Klassik award winning Catalonian soprano Nuria Rial.
And both recordings have become golden. According to the critics their music is the kind of music that can be listened to in any situation.
“I think that Elemér is one of the best drummers in the world today. He is capable of hearing any musical moment from the inside, his musicality, sensitivity, and spontaneous decisions can bring out the best of any musician he plays with. He hits his instrument beautifully…I always love it when I have the opportunity to play with him or hear him play….” wrote Pat Metheny
