Guliba Troupe

Shepherd Codes

Hungarian Language - Family program

Two folk dancer/folk dance teacher friends posed themselves a question and when they’d found the answer, they formed Guliba Troupe . The question was: What do we want for our children? This is their answer: “For them to know, live and enjoy their own dances, songs, customs and traditions through play, story, and humor. This is the key to a child’s spirit”. They stress the importance of the presence of children not only as audience at their performances, but as active participants. After several years of experience teaching children they find the following thought amongst the most important:

“We crouch down to play with them and this is how we can really rise up to their little world.”

In Guliba Troupe’s story/dance performance of “Shepherd Codes” children become familiar with the shepherd’s celebration customs. They can participate, for example, in collecting dew on Saint George’s Day and taking the animals out to the summer pastures. They find out what it means when ‘you can see the crow in the wheat’, or why there should be thunder before Saint George’s Day. They can also go along with the herder on his adventurous search for his goats. All this comes alive with music, song and dance.

After the performance, members of the troupe demonstrate the instruments, teach a song and lead a dance house for the children.
