Pengetős Trio - record release concert / Berka dance house
Upcoming events
19:00 Pengetős Trio: “Este nálunk” – record release concert
The zither, tambura and coboz meet in Pengetős Trio like long lost relatives with a lot to catch-up on. [Pengetős means “plucked” in English – as in, a plucked instrument.] This is a unique program of three related instruments not usually heard playing together.
The basis of the band’s repertoire is authentic Hungarian folk music re-thought with open-mindedness, creativity and humility, to create its own image. The music is virtuosic, innovative and traditional.
They named their record “ Este nálunk ” [roughly: at our place tonight] to evoke the intimacy of the chamber music sound and family-like atmosphere favored by the trio. The recorded material has crystallized over the past years of working together, their musical experience and playing in concert together. Though some of the pieces are the same age as the band, there are also some new ones that went straight onto the recording. There are both virtuoso instrumental dance tunes, and lyrical vocal pieces distinguished by text and melody carefully chosen for a high standard of quality.
“Though these three instruments [zither, tambura coboz] certainly didn’t meet within the framework of traditional culture - we try to imagine that extraordinary situation when they did, and we try to develop a unified sound while preserving our instruments’ unique playing styles.”
While the zither is found all over the Carpathian Basin; the coboz and tambura are more specialized. The coboz represents mainly a Moldavian, Bukovinan and more ‘eastern world of sound’. The tambura depicts elements of folk music of Southern Slavic ethnic groups.
