Fonó Wednesday Dance House - this week : Erdőfű and Magyarhang bands

Erdőfű was founded through a collaboration of dance house musicians active in Hungary. Members of Erdőfű are dedicated to authentic performance of folk music traditions of the Carpathian Basin in both dance houses and in concert. The initiative can also be viewed as a workshop with the goal of presenting an overview of the variety of bowed string folk music of the Hungarian language areas and of other ethnic groups that live there - while always keeping the specific character of each area or village in view.

The band:
Éri Katalin – double bass, cello, hit cello
Kiss Balbinat Ádám – violin voice
Maruzsenszki Andor – violin
Éri Márton – viola, kontra

Magyarhang Band
The band members are siblings: Mészáros Erzsébet, Mészáros Vince, Mészáros Mátyás. Erzsébet, plays lead fiddle, she is a folk musician and music teacher. Vincze plays viola, he is also a folk musician and music teacher. Both of them have diplomas from the folk music department of the Liszt Academy of Music. The bass player Mátyás is a student at the Liszt Academy of Music studying music education, conducting and voice. He is also a member of the group: A Capella Silentium.

They grew up in an artistic family in a village in Hungary’s Káli Basin. Their life and interests formed there. As children they were surrounded by folk music, fine arts, classical music and polyphonic singing. They still use polyphonic singing in their vocal compositions, consciously incorporating these aspects of music theory, harmony and their three singing voices. This uniqueness has become part of their folk music performance as well.

Magyarhang (meaning: Hungarian sound) Band was formed ten years ago when they were in secondary school and as the name may suggest, they nurture folk music traditions of the Hungarian language area. Since their formation, they have also played at several folklore festivals abroad, from Bukovina to Western and Northern Europe. In Hungary they perform regularly with the goal of introducing the richness of Hungarian folk music to as wide an audience as possible.
