Martha Töpferová & Milokraj (CZ)

Marta Topferova is one of the most unique singers and songwriters of her generation. Hailing from the Czech Republic, and immigrating to the United States at a young age, Marta grew up with various cultural influences. This propelled her to sing and write music drawing from both her Czech heritage, as well as Latin American music she encountered amidst the Hispanic community in the U.S.

Marta’ s musical beginnings were in two choirs, where she performed and recorded music by composers such as Pergolesi, Haydn, Poulenc or Britten. She further developed her skills by studying voice, guitar, the four-string cuatro and hand percussion. Establishing herself in New York City in 1996, Marta’s music rapidly developed into a remarkable mix of Latin American folklore with undeniable hints of her Eastern-European roots.

In 2012, Marta returned back to Prague, in order to launch a project called Milokraj (“beloved land)”, which draws inspiration from her own cultural background. In addition to writing in Czech for the first time, Marta also set various Czech poets to music. Milokraj’s first CD was nominated for the Anděl award (Czech Grammy) in the world music category, and features an all-star line up of Eastern-European musicians.
