Babra Band
works with the Fonó to create evenings that present bands from abroad whose music guarantees both cultural continuity and renewal on the Balkan music scene. They invite bands that are able to demonstrate their own Balkan music, while looking for creative paths.
The double concerts present bands that inspire audiences with their particular expression of Balkan music.
Thanos Stavridis
and dRom’s performances have an explosive energy. They fearlessly and playfully build their music which brings the most passionate of the Balkan music to the stage: the music of Greece.
Babra
’s tambura-centered music offers a kind of contrast, with the more continental atmosphere afforded by the role the clarinet and accordion.
Thanos Stavridis
is one of the most acclaimed Greek musicians. His collaborations include both performances and recordings with some of the most famous Greek and Balkan singers, composers and musicians, such as: George Dalaras, Theodosii Spassov, Petar Ralchev and many others. He is a pioneer on Greece’s Balkan scene and a founding member of "North Partners", "Cabaret Balkan" and now "dRom".
... dRom is a band that adores crossing the boundaries of space and time. They draw sounds and senses from Gypsy melodies of past times then marry them with Balkan essence. Full of joy and energy, they improvise on wild rhythms, tracing a route that starts from Epirus, crosses Thessaloniki, Skopje, Sofia, and Belgrade and reaches Bucharest. During this journey, clarinet, kaval, accordion, guitars, bass and percussions whip up and craze the spirits...
dRom:
Thanos Stavridis - accordion
Vassilis Athanasiou: clarinet
Giannis Karakalpakidis: electric guitar
Christos Tasios: percussion
Babra breathes new life into the varied musical heritage of the Southern Slavic groups. The band was formed in 2014 in Budapest where Western and Eastern Europe intersect in a melting pot of surviving traditional and novelty urban cultures. The band members are connected to the music of Slavic ethnic groups settled along the Danube though a shared enthusiasm and family ties. Their pursuit is to create new musical forms with unique sound and style – while conserving the authenticity and spirit of the local Slavic music. The band tours and plays in the Slavic communities around Budapest. They are also active in Budapest’s dance house scene. Their sound is characterized by unity of the tamburas, and harmony of the clarinet and accordion. Their mission is to embody this rich musical heritage with youthful energy, while adding value with their unique interpretations.
